Since its inauguration in 1976, the Khalifa International Stadium has hosted a long list of historic sporting events. In fact, it’s rare to mention football or athletics in Qatar without referring to this stadium, which underwent a series of renovations and upgrades in preparation for the FIFA World Cup 2022. Upon its reopening in May 2017, the stadium hosted the Amir Cup final, an event close to the hearts of all Qataris. The stadium has also hosted matches from the Arabian Gulf Cup, the FIFA Club World Cup, World Athletics Championships, and other events. The Khalifa International Stadium played a crucial role in hosting the biggest football event in the world, the FIFA World Cup in Qatar.
