Qalaat al Thaqab

Al Thaqab Fort

Qalaat al Thaqab is located 12 kilometers south of Al Ruwais, and its construction dates back to ancient times. Archaeological discoveries suggest that this fort dates back to the 19th century, though the surrounding artifacts indicate it might have been built before that time. Qalaat al Thaqab was restored during the 1980s. The fort provided a safe haven for nearby residents during times of war, like other desert forts. Interestingly, the word “Thaqab” refers to the remaining water in a valley after rainfall, symbolizing the fresh water that remains in the ground.
